The first thing I do with each of my coaching clients is set goals. Goal setting is about a long term vision and short term motivation.
Why Set Goals?
Setting goals will help you get a vision of what you want. It will help you identify distractions which might hinder your success.
When you write goals down it helps program your subconscious mind to achieve those goals. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, looking at your goals can boost your motivation.
Goal Setting Exercise
This is one of the exercises I run through with each of my clients to set goals.
When thinking about, or setting your goals, always have the end vision in mind and then work backwards to set attainable steps.
I want you to write down everything you want to achieve in the following areas over the next 10 years. Don’t hold back, be bold and aggressive after all this is about YOU and what YOU want to achieve:
- Career or business
- Professional development and continued learning
- Physical health
- Hobbies or volunteer work
Once you’ve determined your goals you need to turn them into SMART goals.
What is a SMART goal?
It’s a way of breaking down your goals to clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, use your time and resources productively, and achieve what you want in life.
Define the goal as much as possible:
- WHO is involved
- WHAT do you want to achieve
- WHERE will it be done
- WHY am I doing it
- WHICH constraints/requirements do I have
Can you track the progress and measure outcomes? How will I know when I have achieved my goal.
Make sure the goal is not out of reach. Can it be achieved? How?
Is the goal worthwhile and will it meet your needs? Is it consistent with your other goals and your short and long term plans?
I will complete this step by………..
Other things to think about
You need to identify any obstacles or difficulties that are going to stop you from reaching your goals.
When your goal is reached what skills do you need to then be at the top of your game – what is the one skill which will have the greatest impact on your life. Identify it. Work on it. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY!
Take the time to celebrate achieving your goal or a specific milestone. It doesn’t have to be a big celebration, just something to keep you going and motivated.
Every day take time to look at your goals. Rework them when they need to be reworked and set new goals.
The key to success and reaching your goals is to always have something to work towards, don’t cut corners with planning or identifying your goals and always celebrate your success!
